Die gut erhaltene Festungsanlage, in Form der die Stadt umgebenden Mauer, sowie die klar strukturierte, schachbrettartig angelegte, darin befindliche, habitable Fl\u00e4che, geht auf den franz\u00f6sischen Architekt Th\u00e9odore Cornut in den 70-igern des 18. Jahrhunderts zur\u00fcck. In Folge fiel Essaouira in einen Winterschlaf und erwachte erst wieder vor wenigen Jahren daraus.
